Patrick's Tumblog
Putting WALL-E up against Bolt and Kung Fu Panda rather than letting it compete against Slumdog Millionaire and Benjamin Button is like requiring a 13-year-old chess prodigy to compete only against other children, regardless whether he could stand his own against adult grandmasters.

I agree. I think it’s stupid to have a “best animated film” category. Then again, best picture takes acting into account—animated films are just voice acting, I suppose. I don’t know.

The Academy has nominated animated films for Best Picture before. Beauty and the Beast comes to mind. Honestly though, while Wall-E is a touching film, I wouldn’t compare it to Slumdog or Benjamin Button. The themes are so much less complex. Sure there were some touching moments, but the film had an obnoxious and overly simplistic environmental tone that really detracted from its overall value in my opinion.

Beauty and the Beast is the only animated film to have been nominated for best picture.
