Heartless: The Story of the Tin Man

I was at John Carrington’s house last night, and he showed me this video from the talented Whitestone Motion Pictures group. The short film is well done, to be sure, but I really liked the song they wrote for the girl in the story, which is also performed for the credits. I’ll post it separately, as Whitestone Motion Pictures makes all of their films and music (and some of their sheet music!) available for free from their website.

When I drive home from Rebecca’s at night, I take the backroads. In the field before the hill going up to the rear entrance to my neighborhood, I’ve noticed some serious lightning bug activity, and I’ve been meaning to try to photograph it.

Well anyway, all I had to use was a Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime lens, so I just tried various exposures at various apertures, sitting the camera on the hood of my car and using the “mirror lockup” custom function to prevent unnecessary shaking.

Brightness is a funny thing on monitors. I hope you guys can see these.

I was raised up believing I was somehow unique
Like a snowflake distinct among snowflakes, unique in each way you can see
And now after some thinking, I’d say I’d rather be
A functioning cog in some great machinery serving something beyond me

But I don’t, I don’t know what that will be
I’ll get back to you someday soon you will see

What’s my name, what’s my station, oh, just tell me what I should do
I don’t need to be kind to the armies of night that would do such injustice to you
Or bow down and be grateful and say “sure, take all that you see”
To the men who move only in dimly-lit halls and determine my future for me

And I don’t, I don’t know who to believe
I’ll get back to you someday soon you will see

If I know only one thing, it’s that everything that I see
Of the world outside is so inconceivable often I barely can speak
Yeah I’m tongue-tied and dizzy and I can’t keep it to myself
What good is it to sing helplessness blues, why should I wait for anyone else?

And I know, I know you will keep me on the shelf
I’ll come back to you someday soon myself

If I had an orchard, I’d work till I’m raw
If I had an orchard, I’d work till I’m sore
And you would wait tables and soon run the store

Gold hair in the sunlight, my light in the dawn
If I had an orchard, I’d work till I’m sore
If I had an orchard, I’d work till I’m sore
Someday I’ll be like the man on the screen

PS: I was actually this rhetorical dude, who has never really paid attention in “What to put in your belly” classes!!

For some reason, my childhood suspension of disbelief had no problem with the fact that this ancient galaxy is full of humans, but was derailed by language. There’s no Asia OR Europe there, so where’d they get all the Indo-European roots?

I had never considered this before. GEEZ LUCAS, YOU REALLY MESSED UP THIS TIME.

Essays are like skirts. They should be long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to make it interesting.
